Up to 14 inches of snow possible along the coast
GRAY — The National Weather Service is saying that heavy snow is expected overnight tonight through Tuesday night, as a coastal storm develops off the mid-Atlantic coast and intensifies as it moves northeast Tuesday and Tuesday night.
The storm is predicted to produce heavy snow across the region through Tuesday night, with the snow briefly mixing with rain or sleet along the immediate coast for a time Tuesday afternoon or evening.
A winter storm warning remains in effect from 4 a.m. to midnight Tuesday, March 19. Areas along and just inland of the Midcoast can expect snow accumulations of 10 to 14 inches late tonight into Tuesday night.
Temperatures will be in the mid-20s to lower 30s, with northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.
Snowfall rates of an inch or more an hour are possible, with some power outages also possible near the coast in heavy, wet snow.
Some rain could mix in along the immediate coast Tuesday afternoon, according to the NWS.
The seven-day forecast follows.
Monday night: A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly after 4 a.m. Increasing clouds, with a low around 24 degrees Fahrenheit. Calm wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph after midnight.
Tuesday: Snow, mainly after 9 a.m. High near 32 F. East wind 10 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Tuesday night: Snow. Low around 25 F. Blustery, with a northeast wind 15 to 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.
Wednesday: Snow showers before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow showers. High near 35 F. West wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent.
Wednesday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24 F. West wind around 10 mph.
Thursday: A chance of snow showers before 1 p.m., then a chance of rain and snow showers between 1 and 4 p.m., then a chance of rain after 4 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 36 F. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Thursday night: A chance of rain and snow showers before 8 p.m., then a slight chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 23 F. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Friday: A chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 37 F. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
Friday night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 24 F.
Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 38 F.
Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26 F.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 38.
Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 24 F.
Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 39 F.
