Unused grain silo fire in Rockland under investigation
ROCKLAND — Fire in an unused grain silo in Rockland is under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office, with assistance from Rockland police and firefighters.
Just before 9:45 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2025, Knox Regional Communications Center received a report of smoke coming from the three-story concrete structure at the bend of the road where Mechanic and Atlantic streets meet.
Firefighters were able to access the bottom floor from one entrance. While they were doing so, other crew members rode the bucket of the ladder truck skyward to look for flames on the roofs of the two-silo structure. One the ground, hoses were set up. Camden Fire Dept., acting as the Rapid Intervention Team for Rockland FD, made sure that all other points of entry were accessible, which required trimming brush branches and forcing open doors.
Inside the site where smoke blew, interior-certified personnel located fire in abandoned cement bags on the first floor, and more fire among trash on the second floor, according to Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock. An hour after the smoke was reported, firefighters were still working to gain access to the third floor. Their intent in doing so was to look for anyone who may have remained in the structure, which does not have electricity.
Responding to the scene were Rockland, Rockport, and Camden fire departments, as well as Rockland Police and the Maine Fire Marshal's Office.
Mutual aid cleared the scene around 11:20 a.m.
