Natalie MacMaster, Donnell Leahy present a Celtic Family Christmas at Camden Opera House
Acclaimed fiddle player Natalie MacMaster brings her entire family (husband Donnell Leahy and their six children) to the Opera House for a memorable holiday concert on Wednesday, December 6, at 7 p.m.
Through a mix of both song and dance, the audience will take take a journey through virtuoso performances that tell the story of the night before Christmas in the Leahy/MacMaster household.
“We’re excited to be travelling as a family,” said Donnell, in a news release. “It’s lovely to bring light and happiness to families and fans particularly at t his time of year.”
Between them, Natalie and Donnell have released 25 albums with combined album sales in excess of one million. They won 5 JUNO awards, have been nominated for a Grammy, and collaborated with artists as diverse as Yo -Yo -Ma, Alison Krauss, Jesse Cook and Bela Fleck.
“The fiddle was definitely common ground for us when we first got together,” said McMaster. “I was so in awe of Donnell’s family. He is one of 11 siblings who play and have a family band. And here I am doing almost exactly the same thing.”
MacMaster is referring to her and Leahy’s six musically gifted children, who today are a centerpiece of their show though not because the couple necessarily envision showbiz careers for Mary Frances, Michael, Clare, Julia, Alec and Sadie. Rather, they realized early on that being on the road without their kids was infinitely harder than touring with them. That the children were already being home schooled (MacMaster has a teaching degree) made it even easier.
“Initially we were reluctant to let the kids perform. We worried about expectations. But one night we let Mary Frances take the stage. Soon after that Michael wanted to play. And you must reward practice.”
