Warren metal artist Jay Sawyer to present The Maestro!

Event has passed

WARREN — Warren artist and metal sculptor Jay Sawyer will host an open studio on Sunday, June 26, with two scheduled presentations to discuss his latest commission, The Maestro!

The commission came about when clients approached Sawyer with a request for a sculpture that would enhance their new home in Stockbridge, Mass., while celebrating music and its' influence on the region, since that was precisely what drew them to the area. Off and on discussions for the next few months led to the conception. Sawyer proposed creating the back section of a conductor's jacket with the conductor at work.

The raw material was 1/8th-inch mild steel that had been salvaged during the demolition of The American Can Company in Portland in 2013. As this steel plate was torn from the wooden decks, several folds, rolls and wrinkles formed. With much of Sawyer’s inspiration coming from reclaimed material, this steel plate seemed to speak strongly as potential for this commission and with a big breath Sawyer committed to working these characteristics into a work of art.

The Maestro! will be on view all day Sunday, with group presentations scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2pm, before the sculpture is transported to Stockbridge the following week. The event will also provide an opportunity for fans of Sawyer's rustic work to view other new works available for purchase while strolling the Sawyer’s outdoor environment.

The gallery entrance is at 131 Camden Road (Route 90) in Warren, 1/4-mile west of the Route 1 intersection. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. FMI: call 273-3948 or visit jaysawyer.com.
