ROCKLAND — Penobscot Bay Language School is hosting a volunteer-led holiday event, based on the Mexican tradition of “posadas,” Sunday, Dec. 18, from 1 - 4 p.m.
This holiday party is open to the community with a suggested $10 donation. All are welcome. Donations can be made online or at the door. The event will be held at PBLS’ Rockland location at 28 Gay Street, Rockland, ME 04841.
Following the success of the Dia De los Muertos event at PBLS earlier this fall, a family in attendance, with strong family ties to Mexico, offered to sponsor and host an authentic Mexican holiday event–a posada) – with PBLS. Traditional snacks from Mexico will be provided (including tacos de canasta, guacamole, ponche, gelatina, and other authentic treats). The event includes popular and traditional holiday songs (in both English and Spanish).
There will be a discussion about the history and cultural significance of this unique holiday tradition, as well as other holiday customs from around the world from the diverse group of attendees. Music, dancing, singing, drinks, snacks and – just for the niños & niñas – a piñata full of authentic Mexican candy will be included at the event.
The tradition of posadas celebrates the Nativity (birth of Jesus Christ) with a community procession of children and adults, in costume, acting out the roles of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and other roles from the Christian tradition. This community event takes people from house to house to sing, eat holiday snacks, drink “ponche”, and spend the holidays with family, friends and neighbors.
