BELFAST — Local participatory arts nonprofit, Belfast Flying Shoes (BFS), presents the final Sundays in the Park, produced in collaboration with Belfast's Department of Parks & Recreation and the Belfast Bay Fiddlers. The series concludes on Sunday, October 3, at Steamboat Landing on Belfast's waterfront.

Sundays in the Park starts at 2:30 p.m. with a percussive dance workshop on Cape Breton step dancing, to help participants discover and practice exciting ways for their shoes to fly, followed by a 3:30 p.m. music workshop focusing on a distinctive branch of the contra dance music repertoire – Cape Breton tunes. Guest performers and workshop participants will strut their stuff at the 5 p.m. concert and showcase, and the event concludes with a 6 – 8 p.m. jam session hosted by the Belfast Bay Fiddlers, who welcome all vaccinated jam session participants of any age, instrument, and experience level.

The October 3 event features Portland-based Katie McNally (fiddle) and Neil Pearlman (piano and Cape Breton step dancing). Locals may know Neil from Maine Fiddle Camp (MFC) and as the co-host of recent online MFC "Maestro Bistro" events, or from his podcast, TradCafe.

Pearlman began dancing at age 3 and started soon afterward on piano, continuing to blaze his own trail making music that ranges from traditional to avant-garde. Both McNally and Pearlman grew up playing Scottish and Cape Breton music – McNally in Boston, and Pearlman in Portland – and they are passionate educators, sharing the traditions through their touring and teaching.

Sundays in the Park is free and open to the public, with suggested donations on a sliding scale of $1 to $35. The October 3 event is sponsored by First National Bank.

Current Maine CDC guidelines for outdoor events will be followed – and bring a mask. For details, visit the Belfast Flying Shoes website ( or contact
