CUMBERLAND — Due to the ongoing developments surrounding COVID-19 and its effects on the entire Maine golfing community, the Maine State Golf Association has canceled all men’s and women’s events through May 15, according to a news release.

“While we are saddened to cancel some of our early season events, we are doing so with the health and safety of all players and golf course employees in mind,” the release stated. “Hopefully this early setback will be a minor blip in our rearview mirror as we move further into the 2020 golf season. In the meantime, stay safe and healthy, and we hope to see you on the golf course soon.”

The MSGA noted, in the release, it is uncertain if any of these events will be rescheduled.

“Please know that the published schedule has and will continue to change,” the release stated.

While courses adjust their own schedules for outings, leagues, and tournaments, the MSGA will adjust its schedule to work with the courses to meet their needs, per the release.

“We will work with the host sites that were slated to welcome our players to find another date when and if possible,” the release stated.

Because there will be no events for the first half of May, the registration date for men’s MSGA Play Days will be moved to May 1. Registration will not open April 16 as originally planned.

“Rest assured that we have been working diligently with those in Augusta to work toward a goal of safely resuming play as soon as possible here in Maine,” the release stated. “We understand that golfers are chomping at the bit to get back out on the course as soon as possible, and we are working to help make golf an acceptable form of outdoor recreation.”
