CAMDEN — United Midcoast Charities (UMC) elected two new members to its board of directors at the organization’s Annual Meeting in December. They are Rockport resident Frank Hackett and Mary Sargent of Lincolnville.

Hackett relocated in 2018 from the Hudson Valley. He has experience from past roles as partner at a CPA firm, COO of a leather design firm, CFO of a lamp manufacturer and a consultant to many for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Sargent is the executive director of Penobscot Shores Retirement Community in Belfast. From 2010 to 2018, she was the administrator at Quarry Hill in Camden. She has been a West Bay Rotarian since 2012 and is the club’s immediate past president.

UMC also has a newly elected executive committee. Starting in their roles in January 2020 are Betsy Clemens Saltonstall, of Rockport, as president; Lori Alexander, of Rockport, as vice president; John Viehman, of Rockport, UMC’s immediate past president, as secretary; and Jim Hengerer, of Rockland, as chair of UMC’s Grants Committee.

Steve Kemple, of Lincolnville, is remaining on the executive committee for a second year as treasurer.

Saltonstall, who works for Maine Medical Center’s philanthropy office, joined UMC in 2014, began leading its development efforts in 2016, and became vice president in 2017. She is very familiar with Midcoast Maine’s nonprofit community, having served on several area boards: Midcoast Recreation Center, Friends of Midcoast Maine and Destination Wellness.

“It is a privilege to do this philanthropic work with such a wonderful board and dedicated staff,” said Saltonstall, in a news release. “I look forward to continuing our work, providing guidance for donors and nonprofit agencies. Donors can feel confident contributing to UMC because we’ve instituted a very diligent grant application review and funding distribution process.”

United Midcoast Charities, founded in 1942, is a 501c3 community-supported nonprofit whose mission is to energize Midcoast Maine nonprofit agencies through finance and guidance, supporting a network of resources stronger than any single organization. UMC’s primary areas of focus are food, housing, health and safety, and economic security. Since 2017, UMC has awarded grants totaling $1.5 million to more than 50 agencies as part of their community-led competitive grants program.
