CASTINE — As the final buzzer sounded inside the Smith Gymnasium in Castine on Friday, Jan. 10, the host Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team collected a 65-22 victory over SUNY Canton in a North Atlantic Conference game.

In the game, 2016 Searsport District High School alumna Melinda Ogden recorded 14 points and four three-pointers to set the Maine Maritime record for career three-pointers with 206.

Since that Friday victory, Ogden tallied an additional eight three-pointers to boost her career total to 214.

Her record will only continue to grow as the Mariners have 10 more regular season contests and are poised to make a playoff run.

Ogden, who scored 1,000 points as a Searsport Viking, is nearing the 1,000 mark at Maine Maritime.

Presently, she sits at 914 points in her collegiate career.

In a 2018 interview, Ogden noted she began her athletic career in gymnastics career at four-years-old, an activity she only briefly participated in.

“[A]fter three weeks of no progress my father decided maybe basketball would be a better fit and surely it was,” she recalled. “Basketball eventually consumed every ounce of my time for the fact that I loved all aspects of the game: competing, shooting, handling the ball, and even defense.”
