Miyazaki in Maine: The Universal Message of a Japanese Animator

Event has passed

ROCKPORT — Miyazaki in Maine: The Universal Message of a Japanese Animator, a talk by Prof. Susan Napier, will take place Friday, Aug. 16, at 5:30 p.m., at The Barn Swallow Book Shop, in Rockport.

Hayao Miyazaki (born Tokyo, 1941) is widely considered to be the world’s greatest living animator, according to Barnswallow, in a news release. Over the course of his almost 60 year career he has delighted audiences globally with his compelling, beautifully animated tales of adventure and self-discovery.

While Miyazaki grew up in war-torn Japan and was inspired by Japan’s natural beauty, he was also heavily influenced by Western children’s literature. His movies express universal messages in which his characters, often independent females, confront the world’s challenges with intelligence and resilience.

Susan Napier is professor of rhetoric and Japanese studies at Tufts University and one of the leading authorities on Japanese animation in the world, according to the release.
