From Sept. 2 - Oct. 29, artist and writer Judy O’Dell will exhibit a collection of photographs at the Rockport Public Library in a show entitled, “What the Glaciers Left Behind.” The display in the library’s Marine Room will feature images of glacial erratics that O’Dell created using a digital camera modified to record infrared light. 

 

According to a Library news release, glacial erratics are rocks or boulders that have been moved by ice and deposited in new locations where they may seem “out-of-place” since they may not match native bedrock of the area. The public will have an opportunity to learn more about the topic in greater detail on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m., when Brooks McKinney, Ph.D. gives his presentation “Glacial Erratics: Strange Rocks from Stranger Times” at the Rockport Library.

 

O’Dell’s show of photography will be accompanied by a few selections of geologically-inspired book art created by Sandy Weisman. Weisman is the owner of 26 Split Rock Cove, an artist retreat, studios, and workshop space in South Thomaston.

 

The exhibit will also have a “community board” where the public is encouraged to hang pictures of erratics they have encountered.
