Waterfall Arts brings Great Pumpkin Pageant back to Belfast

BELFAST — Waterfall Arts brings another one of the organization’s All Ages Art Happenings (AAAH) to Belfast this fall. The second annual Great Pumpkin Pageant returns to Steamboat Landing on Saturday, October 30, at 10 a.m.

Last year, with COVID-19 safety protocol at the fore, Kids & Families Program Manager at Waterfall Arts, Bridget Matros, orchestrated a creative way for kids of all ages to celebrate Halloween safely.

“It was a massive success by all accounts, as the community arts center brought treats, pumpkins and a festive autumn scene to the waterfront at Steamboat Landing Park,” said Waterfall Arts, in a news release. “After last year, it became clear: a new tradition was born!”

Partnerships and volunteers make these special community events happen – Johnny's Seeds donates free pumpkins for folks to pick up at Waterfall Arts, local businesses such as CG Bikes and Out On A Whimsey donate prizes, City of Belfast Parks and Recreation staff lend helping hands and tables, and about a dozen locals pitch in on everything from sprucing up the gazebo to donating give-away goodies. The Belfast Co-Op is donating one hundred apples that organizer Matros hopes to turn into caramel apples with the help of volunteers.

Pick up your free pumpkin a week beforehand at Waterfall Arts on Friday, October 22, after 5 p.m., or at the YMCA Trunk-or-Treat on October 24. Then get decorating!

A “Grand Procession” will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m., with costumed families presenting decorated pumpkins along the waterfront Harborwalk.

Come and enjoy the pumpkins on display, then vote for your favorite artful creations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., as artists retrieve their pumpkins and prizes will be awarded to those voted Spookiest, Silliest, Most Skillful, and Most Unique. This year a fifth category has been added for all entries by adults.

Launched in 2000, Waterfall Arts is a community arts center that offers resources to arts enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. We welcome the public to engage in the arts through classes, exhibitions, art events, performances, public art projects, open studios (in clay, glass, print, and darkroom photography) and more.
