Waldo Theatre rings in the holidays with jazz concert

WALDOBORO — The board of the Waldo Theatre invites the public to a holiday jazz concert on Saturday, December 9. The concert, featuring the 18-piece Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra (MoJO), is at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Broad Bay Congregational Church in Waldoboro.

The board is excited to bring an evening of jazzy Christmas cheer to the community and rekindle a beloved holiday tradition in the town. MoJO has a way of bringing big-band music to life," says board member Melissa Smith, and "we're grateful for their long-standing support of the Waldo." The concert is a way to acknowledge the many volunteers and supporters who have helped with clean-up days, taken care of the grounds, hosted community dinners, evaluated the theatre building, and carried out countless other tasks in recent months.

The Waldo Theatre board has had very busy year working behind the scenes. Some of its accomplishments include restoring non-profit status, recruiting an energetic and diverse board of directors, stabilizing the building so that moisture is under control, assessing the buildings restoration needs, and preparing for a capital campaign to raise the funds needed to completely restore the building. In addition, all inherited debt has been paid off and the organization received a Maine Community Foundation grant to build capacity. Three priorities are to continue to strengthen the board, have a new website up and running in January, and a new roof on by spring.

The board seeks to transform the historic Waldo Theatre into an arts and music center that offers year-round programming for everyone in the greater Waldoboro area. "We are excited to see the support and involvement of the community growing," says board member Janet McMahon. "In the past several months, so many people have come to us saying they want to help bring the Waldo back. There's a sense that we're all going to do this together and that the theatre will be better than ever."
Broad Bay Church has graciously agreed to host the event. In addition, the church will be having a crafts fair on the same day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crafts, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, soups and a children's only shopping table will be offered.

A suggested concert donation of $10 will go toward restoring the theatre. For more information about the concert, or to find out how you can become a part of the Waldo Theatre's transformation, please contact info@thewaldotheatre.com.
