UPDATE: Marine Patrol identify body following canoe capsize in Down East waters

    SULLIVAN — Marine Patrol has released the identity of the man whose body was recovered in Flanders Bay, Thursday, Nov. 7.

    The body of Robert Hill, 36 of Trenton was recovered by Marine Patrol after he reportedly went in the water when the canoe he and another man were in capsized.

    The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m., around 100 yards from shore near Ober Cove Road in Flanders Bay, in Sullivan.

    According to Marine Patrol reports, the two were planning to harvest clams when their canoe capsized. The other man was able to swim to shore however Hill was unable to.

    An earlier release from Marine Patrol indicated that the other man made a call to 911, however Marine Patrol reports that a good Samaritan who witnessed the incident made the call. 

    Marine Patrol conducted a search nearby with three patrol vessels and along the shore on foot. Marine Patrol was joined in the search by US Coast Guard, the Sullivan Fire Department and local residents.

    Hill's body was recovered at approximately 1:30 p.m. by Marine Patrol and confirmed deceased by local EMS. His body has been transported to a local funeral home.

     

    SULLIVAN — Marine Patrol officers recovered the body of a male who reportedly went in the water Nov. 7 at approximately 10:30 a.m. after the canoe he and another man were in capsized approximately 100 yards from shore near Ober Cove Road in Flanders Bay, Sullivan.

    According to Marine Patrol reports, the two were planning to harvest clams when their canoe capsized. One of the two swam to shore and called 911 while the other did not make it to shore, according to a news release from the Maine Marine Patrol.

    Marine Patrol conducted a search nearby with three patrol vessels and along the shore on foot. 

    The body of the deceased male was recovered at approximately 1:30 p.m. by Marine Patrol and confirmed deceased by local EMS. The canoe has also been recovered. Marine Patrol reports that neither appear to have been wearing life jackets. Names of the two men are being withheld until the family of the deceased man is notified.

    The US Coast Guard was also involved in the search with a 47-foot rescue boat, and helicopter.  Sullivan Fire Department, and good Samaritans were also on-scene searching.

    Water temperature at the time of the search was 52 degrees.
