UNION — A report of a vehicle on its roof in Union turned into a brief search by responders, Saturday, Dec. 8. 

Around 5:30 p.m, a passerby notified Knox County Communications Center of the overturned vehicle on Depot Street near Spring Hill Road. With no further knowledge of the situation, Union Fire and EMS arrived, expecting occupants and possible injuries. Instead, they found a lone compact car, and no people.

Responders began searching the area around the vehicle, with use of a thermal imaging camera, not knowing that the driver had walked to a nearby residence to report the rollover.

According to Lt. Patrick Polky, patrol administrator for Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the sole occupant had been driving around a corner when her passenger-side tires were pulled into a rut.

“She was unable to recover the vehicle, and was pulled off the roadway,” Polky said. “The vehicle came to rest on its roof due to the grade of the ditch.”

The operator was not injured, the vehicle had minor damage, and no violations of law were cited.

“The operator had left the scene originally because she did not have a form of communication.” he said. “So she went to a nearby residence.”

She was located within minutes by Deputy Elwell as he was traveling to the scene.

The lead investigator was Deputy Smith.
