Union Historical Society hosting talk on saving Maine’s forgotten heritage apples

UNION — The Union Historical Society will welcome John Bunker to talk about Maine’s heritage apples Wednesday, August 4.

The Palermo farmer, author, artist, historian, educator and mentor was awarded the Maine Commissioner of Agriculture’s Distinguished Service Award in 2019 for his outstanding contribution to preserving Maine’s historic apple heritage.

Bunker started Fedco Trees in 1984 and worked with the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners to establish Maine’s Heritage Orchard in Unity with more than 500 apple and pear varieties.

He also initiated the Heritage Orchard at the Blaine House in Augusta with apple varieties from all 16 counties.

Known as Maine’s “Apple Whisperer,” Bunker wrote and illustrated “Apples and the Art of Detection.”

The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Old Town House on Town House Road in Union.
