Sylvia M. Harjula, service and obituary

A graveside for Sylvia M. Harjula, who died December 10, 2020, will be held  Friday, May 14, 2021, at 11 a.m., at the Village Cemetery, Erin Street, Thomaston. The Rev. David English will officiate.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, Rockland.

 

THOMASTON — Sylvia M. Harjula, 86, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a brief illness.

Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, June 29, 1934, she was the daughter of Arthur E. And Laura M. (Aalto) Harjula. She began school in Quincy and after moving to Thomaston with her family in 1949, graduated from
Thomaston High School with the class of 1952. She later attended Elim Bible Institute in Lima, New York.

Throughout her working career, she served as a Personal Care Provider.

For many years, Sylvia was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockland. She later attended the Finnish Congregational Church in South Thomaston, where for more than eight years she served as pianist. Sylvia was pleased in earlier years, to host a Saturday Bible Club in her home, inviting neighborhood children to hear Bible stories.

Her favorite hobbies included art, gardening, playing the piano and reading.

Sylvia is survived by her sister, Elaine Kangas of Inverness, Florida; as well as a niece, nephew, and several cousins.

No services will be held at this time. Spring interment will be in the Village Cemetery, Thomaston.
