Phil and Roxy Sears-Johnson’s lessons learned, rewards gained, transition to remote jobs

Sunset Seminars at Camden Yacht Club: Transatlantic Crossing Highlights

Event has passed

CAMDEN — Phil and Roxy Sears-Johnson will share their past two year’s experiences cruising the Caribbean, crossing the North Atlantic double-handed to Ireland and currently sailing the waters off Spain during a Camden Yacht Club Sunset Seminar, Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 7 p.m.

They will share details of preparations of their 47-foot Cheoy Lee Pedrick, Sonder, weather routing, landfall in foreign ports during the global pandemic, and a mid-ocean rigging failure.

Roxy will show stunning photographs during this virtual presentation, according to the Yacht Club, in a news release. Her pictures can also be seen on Instagram at @sailingsonder and illustrating Phil’s articles in Yachting World magazine. Included in their presentation will be lessons learned, rewards gained and their transition to remote jobs.

Phil, 33, grew up learning to sail in the protected waters of Long Island Sound and coastal New England. After moving to Colorado for college and forging a successful career there as a performing and touring musician, he gave in and bought his first boat. On nearly a whim Phil and two childhood friends purchased a 1959 Pearson Triton 28’ in Massachusetts. Over several months they retrofitted it for blue water cruising and then cast off, sailing south from NYC to Havana, Cuba…double-handed tiller steering the whole way.

Somewhere during the adventure, Roxy, a published photographer working in software QA also found her love of sailing. Together they cruised the Triton seasonally in the Bahamas during vacations. Sadly, the Triton was sunk in Hurricane Dorian in 2019, according to the release. However, by this time Roxy had convinced Phil, transitioning to remote jobs meant that they could sail full-time working from a boat. So in early 2019 they purchased Sonder, a 1986 Cheoy Lee Pedrick 47’ in the Virgin Islands.

Phil and Roxy spent two seasons cruising the Caribbean then crossed the North Atlantic double-handed to Ireland in 2020. They are currently sailing in the Mediterranean waters off Spain. Roxy documents their journeys through photography on Instagram at @sailingsonder. Phil has published articles about their experience through Yachting World magazine.

The 2021 Sunset Seminar Series runs from July 7 to August 25 on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. Presentations are free and open to the public. Donations at the door will be accepted, to benefit the nonprofit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP).
