planning to bring meal trailers to harder-to-reach areas

Summer meals for kids, volunteers needed in Waldoboro, Jefferson, Somerville

DAMARISCOTTA — The Lincoln County Summer Meals program is underway, but organizers have new plans in the works.

“The program has been operating in our community for many years, and is open to all children and teens ages 18 and under, no questions asked, and no registration required. We work hard to make free meals as easy to access as possible, but we know there are still many other places we can be,” said Kate Martin, director of Healthy Lincoln County, in a news release. Healthy Lincoln County sponsors the program.

To that end, Martin is working with several partners to pilot a mobile summer meals program in Waldoboro, Jefferson, and Somerville from mid-July to late August.

“We’re taking the great examples of food trucks and ice cream trucks and planning to bring a new summer meals trailer to the harder to reach areas of our community, places we know there are children who may be interested in a lunch, but maybe can’t get to our other sites,” said Martin.

To be successful, the program is seeking a small group of committed volunteers who can help with tasks, such as towing the trailer, posting flyers advertising the meal route, and helping at those meal stops.

Those who are interested, or would like more information can contact Martin at 563-1330 or email her at kmartin@mcdph.org .
