SOUTH THOMASTON — Tuesday, June 11, the iconic steeple and bell tower cupola will be removed by crane from atop the People’s United Methodist Church, located at 13 Chapel Street. As a result of losing the weathervane atop the steeple to high winds several years ago and significant deterioration to the wooden structure over the years, it has become necessary to perform a restoration on the steeple, according to People’s United, in a news release.

The church, which has been memorialized over the years by many artists and photographers, sits on the bank of the Weskeag River just off Route 73 and near the reversing falls in South Thomaston.

The steeple removal will be best viewed from the public landing pier across the river from the church, according to People’s.

“As a congregation of much faith but limited financial resources, we look forward to the challenges ahead to raise funds to assist us with maintaining our buildings and grounds, including the Save our Steeple initiative, for many years to come,” said the Church. “We are grateful for the support we have received so far and encourage others to help by sending contribution directly to the church.”

Mail donations to P.O. Box 83, South Thomaston, ME 04858, or see them on Facebook at www.facebook..com/people’s-united-methodist-church-of-south-thomaston-maine/.

The Church is also in the process of setting up a Go Fund Me page for on-line donations.

As a recognized 501c-3 religious organization, all donations are fully tax deductible.
