ROCKLAND — The Rockland Public Library now has a videophone for the Deaf: the Sorenson Video Relay Service.

The new unit is located in the Reading Room. The videophone allows members of the Deaf community to place and accept phone calls to the hearing via an American Sign Language interpreter. The interpreter can translate from ASL to English or Spanish.

This service is paid for by the government’s Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS) fund.

Note, by law, this service may only be used by the Deaf or hard of hearing. Anyone desiring to use the videophone need only ask at the Reference Desk.
