Sen. Angus King: Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season

There's really nothing like the holidays in Maine. They bring a certain spirit, one that's as magical as the first snow. But it's not the beautiful winter landscapes or the crackling fire that makes this such a wonderful time to be in Maine. No, the joy comes from the opportunity to spend these days surrounded by those we love, in a state we love to call home.

Earlier this month, I saw something that reflects what makes celebrating this season in Maine so special: a Christmas tree on the Rockland waterfront made entirely from lobster traps! This unconventional tree, like the iconic industry of lobstering, is deeply symbolic of life in Maine: tough, hardworking, independent, and resilient. Above all – we're community-driven people, who take care of each other.

Strong communities really are the heart of Maine, and they're why the holidays feel extra special here. Our state, from the tip of the County to the Piscataqua River Bridge in York, from Rumford's paper mills to those lobstermen and their "tree" in Rockland, is really just one big small town with very long streets. Our citizens have a warmth that doesn't diminish when the temperature drops. In fact, it's the opposite – in the coldest days of winter, when family, friends, and neighbors come together to enjoy each other's company and celebrate – that is when our state lights up the most.

So, no matter what holidays you celebrate during this time of year (Christmas and Hanukkah in my house), it's my sincere hope that you are able to enjoy this season surrounded by the warmth of family, friends, and Maine. On behalf of myself, Mary, and the rest of our family, I wish a happy holidays to you and yours!
