CASTINE — Searsport native Melinda Ogden set a second three-pointers record in a recent game, while also collected player of the week honors from a statewide association.

Ogden, a senior on the Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team, successfully made nine three-pointers during a Jan. 25 road victory against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

The nine three-pointers is a school record for most three-pointers made in a women’s basketball game. Ogden tallied a career-high 29 points in the victory, while tallying five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

A few days later, on Jan. 28, Ogden was named the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) Player of the Week.

This record comes after Ogden set the team record for most three-pointers made in a player’s collegiate career.

To date, Ogden has made 227 three-pointers.

By the end of the season, she may have another accomplishment under her belt.

Ogden, who scored 1,000 points as a Searsport Viking, is nearing the 1,000 mark at Maine Maritime.

Presently, she sits at 955 points in her collegiate career.

In a 2018 interview, Ogden noted she began her athletic career in gymnastics career at four-years-old, an activity she only briefly participated in.

“[A]fter three weeks of no progress my father decided maybe basketball would be a better fit and surely it was,” she recalled. “Basketball eventually consumed every ounce of my time for the fact that I loved all aspects of the game: competing, shooting, handling the ball, and even defense.”
