Scouts BSA to form new Union troop for women ages 11 to 17
UNION — Under the new Scouts BSA requirements a new Scouting Troop is being created in Union.
This Troop will be created for strictly for young women ages 11 to 17 under the former Boy Scouts of America requirements and guidelines. Scouts BSA, as Boy Scouts of America is now known, requires a separate troop for young women.
This informational and organizational meeting will be held at the Union Town office meeting room out back of the Union Town Office and Union Fire Department at 567 Common Road from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on December 6, 2018.
The adult leaders for this new unit will be Jim Murphy Jr, Scoutmaster and Mark Abruzese, Committee Chair. Both Jim and Mark are Eagle Scouts and have over 25 years of Scouting experience. Venture Crew Advisor George Freese will also help lead this new unit. The sponsor of the troop is the Peoples United Methodist Church of Union and has committed their support to this unique opportunity for young women.
“Women adult leaders are needed for this unit to help the new scouts thrive.” Jim stated. “It is important to have the new scouts learn the basic foundation of Scouting BSA so that when the scouts reach the upper advancement ranks they will be prepared to not only be the youth leaders of the troop but of their communities as well.”
Any young woman who is willing to participate is welcome regardless of distance to travel and local school affiliation. We will do what is needed to make this a quality scouting unit and to ensure that the Aims of Scouting; character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness, are met and exceeded.
Informal organizational meetings will be held each Thursday starting January 10th, 2019. Regular meetings will be held starting February 7, 2019. Meetings will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the scouting room at the Thompson Memorial School located in the yellow building next to the town office.
