Sandra Mitchell to lead foraging walk, talk on Sears Island
SEARS ISLAND — Friends of Sears Island will host a foraging walk with Sandra Mitchell on Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Mitchell will discuss and assist program attendees in looking for some of the plants which can be found and harvested throughout coastal Maine. She will address "sustainable" gathering and other general guidelines for obtaining edibles from nature.This class is designed for beginners with minimal foraging experience. This event is free and open to the public.
Mitchell is a Registered Maine Recreation Guide and Certified CyberTracker Wildlife tracker. She is an avid birder, and in interested in all naturalist studies. She enjoys spending as much time as possible in the woods and waters of Maine, looking to see what the animals and plants have to teach her.
Sears Island is on Sears Island Road off Route 1 just east of Searsport. Participants should park along the causeway at the end of the road and meet at the kiosk near the island gate by 9:00 a.m. Wear footwear appropriate for walking in the woods and on the beach, and clothing to protect against ticks and the weather. Bring water, a snack, and insect repellent. Please no pets on guided walks. In the event of steady rain, the program will be cancelled.
