recreating the world of the prosperous, seafaring minoans

Roger Dell talk at Strand: An ancient Greek matriarchal culture

Event has passed

ROCKLAND — Art historian and museum educator Roger Dell will present an illustrated lecture on the art and religion of the Minoans titled “How the Matriarchal Minoans Began Western Civilization; And Why They Disappeared,” Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m., at the Strand Theatre, 345 Main Street.

The Minoans were a prosperous, seafaring, matriarchal culture that thrived 3,500 years ago on the Greek Islands. Many scholars believe this highly advanced society to be the source of the myth of Plato’s Atlantis, according to Strand, in a news release.

Dell has written a historical novel, Kalliste, that recreates the world of the Minoans. After the lecture, the book will be on sale and the author will sign copies.

Admission is by donation; proceeds support the nonprofit Strand Theatre.
