ROCKPORT — The next PechaKucha Night, an evening of visual storytelling, will take place on Friday, January 25 at the Rockport Opera House, 6 Central St., Rockport. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 (cash) at the door. A reception immediately follows the program.
The PechaKucha format is a unique presentation style where 8 individuals share their work, ideas, and creative process with a 20-second-per-image, 20-image slideshow. Each of the evening’s presenters will provide a six minute and 40 second glimpse into their craft.
“PechaKucha Night” was conceived in 2003 in Tokyo as a place for young designers to meet, network and show their work in public. It is now an international phenomenon, with events held in more than 1,000 cities around the world. For more information, visit pechakucha.org.
PechaKucha Midcoast, organized in 2009, is now celebrating its 10th year. In honor of that anniversary, a few presenters from its first year have been invited back to present again at its 2019 events. The January edition (Volume 37) will include alumni presenters Sarah Szwajkos, a fine art and commercial photographer; environmental artist and painter Dudley Zopp; and artists Anneli Skaar and Mark Kelly, who recently completed a project at the Arizona/Mexico border revolving around the themes of passports, identity, and compassion.
Additional presenters will be performance artist Heather Lyon; Eel cuisine chef Sara Rademaker, who is the founder and president of American Unagi; Betty Wyman and Amy Carpenter from the single-parenting online community Singlehandedly; interdisciplinary artist and Maine College of Art instructor Adriane Herman; Maine historian and photographer Kevin Johnson; and woodworker/business owner Beth Ireland. The evening’s emcee is multi-disciplinary artist Ariel Hall.
For this event, the supporting sponsor is the Owl and Turtle Bookshop Café, and the reception sponsor is Flatbread Company. PechaKucha Night Midcoast Maine's organizing partners include the Center for Maine Contemporary Art; Farnsworth Art Museum; Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors; Midcoast Magnet; Strand Theatre; Waterfall Arts; and various creative community members.
