ROCKPORT — A fire in the cab of a pickup truck was quickly extinguished Feb. 14 by Rockport firefighters, who also managed to save the tools of a man’s trade.

The incident took place in the parking lot of Sweet Sensations, on Route 1 in Rockport, around 11 a.m. when the driver discovered a fire that had started below the dashboard on the passenger side of his older model Dodge Ram.

Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley said that while the exact cause has yet to be determined, the fire appears to have been mechanical in nature.

He and 10 other firefighters quickly responded with two engines and found the cab fire fully involved.

Using extinguishers, the firefighters knocked down the flames and smoke, and saved all of the man’s surveying equipment that was also in the truck. The vehicle, however, was demolished.

Rockport Fire Department has been busy since the beginning of 2020, with 11 calls alone last weekend. They included several car crashes, downed power lines, structure fires, and fire alarms.

To date, Rockport Fire Department has fielded 34 calls since January 1, compared to 25 last year in the same time period.
