ROCKLAND — The Coastal Children’s Museum will host a fall kick off event on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the museum on Mechanic Street in Rockland. The event is open to the public.

The Fall Kick Off is a chance for families and residents to meet staff, explore the museum’s new exhibits, and enjoy free snacks and games in the enclosed courtyard. New program director Magdalena Belardo Lerch will lead activities, visit with families, and welcome residents back to the museum.

The Coastal Children’s Museum is home to more than a dozen interactive exhibits where children can learn through play: explore rocks and minerals in the cave; run your own general store; examine play animals in the veterinarian’s office; put on a show on the stage; or experience marine life in the touch tank.

Visitors are encouraged to sign up to attend at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m., on the museum’s website: coastalchildrensmuseum.org.

“The museum is happy to welcome Magdalena Belardo Lerch as the new program director,” said the Museum, in a news release.

Lerch brings more than 10 years of experience in museum education to Rockland, combined with teaching and business experience. She has worked with the Washington State History Museum, is a multilingual educator, and a passionate cultural and environmental steward.

“Magda is a consummate educator and learner with a passion for hands-on, inquiry-based, questions-asked learning that brings joy,” said Board president Gayle Bedigian. “She strives for cultural awareness to inspire local and global engagement. After years of museum education her takeaway is simple: Everything in the world is attainable to a child…if only they are introduced and invited.”

The museum’s mission is to provide children and families the opportunity to explore, discover and learn through play about the natural world, the arts and sciences and the diversity of Maine’s Midcoast.
