Rockland readies for Bike to Work Day, Sept. 22

On September 22, the City of Rockland will celebrate Bike to Work Day. The celebration coincides with the national Bike to Work Day and is promoted locally by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.

“With Rockland’s compact footprint and beautiful scenery, biking to work represents a great recreational and commuting opportunity,” said Davis Saltonstall the City of Rockland’s Sustainability Coordinator, in a news release. “The Bicycle Coalition of Maine has been a great ally in expanding that opportunity.”

Bike to Work day is an opportunity for people to get out of their cars and onto their bikes for commuting to work.

Riders who are interested can stop by Chapman Park during their morning commute, between 7-9:30 a.m., and meet other riders. Masks and social distancing are required. Other ways of participating in the event include logging a bike ride on Strava or emailing the City of Rockland directly.

More information on how to participate can be found at facebook.com/events/358210245587808.

Rock City Coffee, Atlantic Baking Company (ABC), Ada’s, Main Street Markets, and Sidecountry Sports are supplying perks and prizes for riders that participate.

    • Rock City will offer a 20% discount to cyclists that bike downtown on Bike to Work Day.
    • Ada’s and Main Street Markets will offer a 10% discount to cyclists all day long.
    • The commuter that travels the furthest distance will receive a $50 gift card to Sidecountry Sports.
    • All participants will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card to Atlantic Baking Company.

The City of Rockland was recently awarded $3,500 by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine to install bike racks, a bike repair station, and road signage to improve safety conditions for cyclists on routes 17 and 73. The City was eligible for this grant opportunity because of the BikeMaine overnight that it hosted last summer.

"We had such a great experience working with the City of Rockland to bring BikeMaine here last summer,” said BikeMaine director, Will Elting. “We are proud to be able to support the ongoing efforts to make Rockland more bike and pedestrian friendly."
