ROCKLAND — A Rockland man remains in jail after he was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly trying to strangle a woman and illegally possessing firearms.

Paul S. Douglas, 55, was charged by Rockland police with domestic violence aggravated assault, possession of a firearm when prohibited, domestic violence criminal threatening and violating conditions of release.

Douglas made his initial appearance in Knox County Unified Court before Judge Paul Mathews Feb. 8.

The state filed a motion Feb. 8 to revoke his pre-conviction bail from a recent arrest in 2018 for operating under the influence, so Douglas is being held without bail at the Knox County Jail.

According to the affidavit filed by Rockland police in Knox County Unified Court, the victim stated that Douglas was mad because he was not invited to her birthday party. She said that Douglas grabbed her by the throat and threw her against the wall.

Police noted red marks on her throat in the affidavit.

The victim also told police that the current alleged incident was at least the 10th time Douglas had tried to strangle her. She said that she almost lost consciousness during one of the incidents and he told her that if she called the police “he would kill her before they arrived,” according to the affidavit.

Police also found a duffle bag with firearms and multiple different rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Douglas will appear in court again Feb 28 for a dispositional conference and again March 14 for a motion to revoke bail hearing.
