ROCKLAND — A Rockland man who is being held at the Knox County Jail after he was arrested in February for allegedly trying to strangle a woman and illegally possessing firearms, is now accused of assaulting another inmate.

Paul S. Douglas, 55, was charged March 15 by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office with aggravated assault and terrorizing.

Douglas has remained in jail since Feb. 8 after the state filed a motion to revoke his pre-conviction bail, from a previous arrest in 2018, for operating under the influence.

According to the affidavit filed in Knox County Unified Court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, jail staff contacted deputies about the alleged assault, which occurred March 13 at the jail. Police then reviewed a surveillance video of the incident.

The video shows Douglas allegedly striking another inmate in the eyes and repeatedly hitting him. The victim’s head hit a table before he fell on the floor.

The victim suffered neck and head injuries, and abrasions to his corneas in both eyes, according to the affidavit. He was treated at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Police said that the incident began over a disagreement about who should have possession of a crossword puzzle in a newspaper.

Douglas was arrested Feb. 8 for allegedly trying to strangle a woman when he was not included in her birthday celebration. He was charged by Rockland police with domestic violence aggravated assault, possession of a firearm when prohibited, domestic violence criminal threatening and violating conditions of release.

Douglas will appear in court again April 25.
