ROCKLAND — The Rockland-based flat track roller derby league, Rock Coast Roller Derby, is recruiting men and women 18 years and older for “Roller Derby 101” beginning Jan. 5.

The program will teach participants the basics of roller derby skating.

Prior experience is not necessary and the league has loaner gear available in order to make this amazing, empowering, inclusive sport more accessible to people in the Midcoast community.

Those wishing to join as a skater must be female and anyone can join the league as a skating or non-skating official, roles that are crucial to the sport. Rock Coast Roller Derby has an inclusive gender policy and will not differentiate between members who identify as female and those who identify as non-binary, a press release noted. The league, through the release, would like to emphasize that roller derby is for everyone, not just women.

Rock Coast Roller Derby was founded in 2011 and is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The mission of the organization is to empower women in the community to be strong, healthy, and confident through the sport of roller derby.

More information and registration can be found on rockcoastrollerderby.org. Advanced registration is strongly recommended, especially if loaner gear is needed.
