Riverhawks girls soccer falls in playoff opener

Wed, 10/17/2018 - 10:30pm

NEWCASTLE — After repeatedly changing the date of the middle school girls soccer playoff contest due to weather, the Medomak and Great Salt Bay teams were finally able to square off Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The Medomak Middle field, however, was too damaged from the water to play on so the contest was moved to Newcastle’s Lincoln Academy, which has a turf field.

“The ball moved very fast on the turf field and the field was much bigger,” said Medomak head coach Andrea Williamson. “This did not seem to slow anyone down.”

Great Salt Bay scored its first goal late in the opening half and carried a 1-0 advantage into the halftime pause.

The second half opened with Medomak being “aggressive and overpowering” Great Salt Bay.

The second goal for Great Salt Bay came with 10 minutes off the clock in the second half, before the advantage was extended to 3-0 prior to the game clock expiring.

“It was a hard fought tough last game,” Williamson said. “The whole [Medomak] team played well and extremely hard.”
