Reporter Ret Talbot author talk: Dive deep into the world of coral

Event has passed

ROCKLAND — Journalist Ret Talbot, author of the forthcoming book, The Coral Reef (Timber Press 2021) will give a talk about the world of coral on Wednesday, October 30, 6:30 p.m., at the Maine Coastal Islands NWR Visitor Center, in Rockland.

The paradox of coral is that it is both frighteningly fragile and remarkably resilient, according to Maine Coastal Islands, in a news release. Stories of coral reefs in trouble dominate the news. Bleaching events, disease, ocean acidification, sunscreen, pollution and a host of other stressors threaten to alter, even destroy, coral reefs as people know them. It is also known that coral is one of the most resilient organisms on Earth, having survived each of the mass extinction events.

What is the future of coral and coral reefs? To answer that question, people need to understand what coral is and what strategies it uses to survive and thrive in a multitude of environments. How can scientists and
conservationists assist coral? What can you do?

Join Talbot to learn the answers to these questions.
