ROCKLAND — Bike to Work Day 2022, a global event, will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022. This event helps to promote bike awareness and general safe biking.

Numerous benefits accrue from biking including: better bike infrastructure reduces road maintenance costs; improves economic vitality by improving access to local stores; lessens non-renewable energy consumption, overall vehicle congestion and parking; results in fewer auto fatalities and improves overall community wellness.

“In addition, biking is a core element to achieving Rockland’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2045,” said Todd Schwendeman, member of the Rockland Energy & Sustainability Advisory Committee, in a news release.

In Rockland several organizations/businesses have volunteered to help promote this year’s Bike to Work Day including Maine Sport, Sidecountry Sports, Rock City Coffee, Main Street Rockland, Rockland Rolls, Renew Rockland, Rockland Bicycle Club and the Rockland Energy & Sustainability Advisory Committee.

A group ride highlighting Bike to Work Day will depart from Chapman Park to Rockland City Hall on Friday, May 20, at 7:45 a.m.

“So dust off your bike, pump up the tires, put your helmet on and enjoy biking in our beautiful Midcoast,” said Schwendeman.
