CAMDEN — Windjammer Festival weekend will be full of nautical fun and adventure this Labor Day weekend. In addition to the many activities planned for the harbor and the downtown of Camden, the Pirates of the Dark Rose will set up camp in Harbor Park, Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
On Saturday, August 31, the Pirates will demonstrate their weapons, fire canons, and try to recruit new pirates into their ranks. This year the Pirates of the Dark Rose are traveling with a pirate music band, the Shank Painters.
On Sunday, September 1, at 11 a.m., in the Camden Amphitheater, the Pirates will enact the History of Lady Pirates. Learn about Grace O’Malley, Mary Read, Sadie Farrell (A.K.A. Sadie the Goat), and Ching Shih. The props for the play are encased in a 100-lb wooden book, that the pirates travel with and is 7 feet tall and 11 feet wide. The book opens to reveal several paintings.
On Sunday, September 1, at 1 p.m., there will be a big pirate skirmish, complete with a diabolical visit by the S/V Must Roos. The pirate ship will dock near the Mary Day at the head of the harbor at 1 p.m.
