Perilous times
I have diligently voted in 14 presidential elections since 1968, and countless other local, state and federal races. Over those fifty-six years, I have never felt the tension, bitterness, and frankly, downright fear, that this year’s races engender, especially on the national level.
And yet, our decisions at every level, especially in selecting our own state and local representatives, matter more than ever. That, among many other reasons, is why on November 5 I’m casting my vote for Mike Ray as our District 40 State Representative.
Mike is the real deal. Over recent years I’ve come to know him as a serious, productive contributor to civic life here in Lincolnville. Lincolnville remains a largely rural town in the best Maine sense, and Mike understands that, as well as the challenges we face as changes roar in.
Mike serves as a Select Board member, and has gained a reputation for honestly evaluating local issues, carefully weighing pros and cons (including economic impacts), and voting in the best interests of the town, and every citizen. He will do the same for our entire district.
As a Maine Guide, Mike obviously learned the crucial balance between Maine’s outdoor sporting traditions, and the need to preserve and protect our natural resources. He knows his way around our woods and waters, and knows that all of us deserve to enjoy and better our lives here, without regard to party, profession, origin or station in life.
Most important to those of us who know Mike: He listens. My conversations with Mike, and observing his record, tell me that he’s running with an open mind, guided by priorities widely shared in our several towns.
Many of us know that the job of a State Representative is not easy, often frustrating, and certainly not lucrative. Mike is stepping up. Elect him, and our towns will continue to move forward.
