SEARSPORT and BELFAST — The Penobscot Bay Singers begin their 46th holiday season of performing choral music with a blending of narrative and song.
Readings from the heartwarming A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens will be enhanced by choral pieces spanning centuries of traditional music, from the words of Shakespeare, Dickens, to contemporary works.
Two performances are scheduled:
Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at Searsport First Congregational Church, 8 Church Street, Searsport
and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Court Street, Belfast.
The Penobscot Bay Singers present “A Christmas Carol: a celebration of the holiday season in story and song. Originally titled A Christmas Carol: Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, the novella by Charles Dickens was first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech.
The Penobscot Bay Singers are presenting a unique interpretation of narrative excerpts read by Jim Rose and Carlton Smith, with musical interludes of hymns and carols of the Christmas season, to enhance this classic tale. The original work was written in chapters called "staves," a term of musical divisions, so presenting the work with music is particularly fitting, according to Singers, in a news release.

“Join us for some ole favorites, holiday classics, and entertaining seasonal works,” said Singers. “A Special Thanks to Dan Kirchoff for our graphic design and perhaps you may recognize your favorite singers in this unique holiday poster.”
Suggested donation is $15. Accompanied children are free.
For nearly 50 years, The Penobscot Bay Singers, originally the Robert Coller Chorale, has been a cultural asset to the Midcoast region and has been entertaining audiences in and around Waldo County since 1973. The singers are an eclectic group, ranging from a pre-teen to singers in their 80s, with varying backgrounds. The common factor is love of choral music and the development of aspiring singers into competent performers, according to Singers.
The Penobscot Bay Singers is a 501(c)(3) organization. Information about the group may be found on Facebook at Penobscot Bay Singers or www. penobscotbaysingers.org.
