Stunt pilots, warbirds to converge at Owls Head

Owls Head Transportation Museum to host Maine’s largest Summer Airshow

Event has passed

OWLS HEAD — The Owls Head Transportation Museum will host the largest airshow in the state this summer with their Wings & Wheels Spectacular Aug. 6 a 7. On both Saturday and Sunday, the sky above Owls Head will be filled by aviation acts including aerobatic performers, historic military warbirds and skydivers.

Event participants include warbirds flown by the American Airpower Museum: a P-51 Mustang and a P-40 Warhawk- complete with camouflage wings and a shark-grin nose. Brooklyn-based pilot and former U.S. Nationals competitor David Windmiller will be performing a wide repertoire of aerobatic acts from his Zivko Edge 540, and Maine Skydiving and Rafting Adventures will open both days of the show with skydiving demonstrations.

Perhaps ‘airshows’ and ‘comedy acts’ rarely meet in the same sentence, but pilot Jason Flood (AKA the Red Ghost) will performing a mid-air comedy routine in his Clipped Wing Cub, as well as an aerobatic act from a modified Pitts S-1S.

Located three miles from Rockland, visiting performers will takeoff alongside biplanes from OHTM’s historic collection. OHTM’s planes fly at all their summer events, and guests may purchase a scenic flight in the open-air cockpit of a 1932 WACO or a 1942 Stearman.

There will also be plenty of fun on the ground, with free rides and demonstrations from the museum’s collection of rare and historic vehicles. Boasting interactive displays, a family fun zone, exhibitor car show and an open-air café, the event will keep guests of all ages entertained.

About the museum:

Founded in 1974, The Owls Head Transportation Museum is a nonprofit educational organization with a mission to collect, preserve, exhibit and historic aircraft and ground vehicles significant to the evolution of transportation for the purpose of education. Unlike static displays, the vast majority of OHTM’s collection is operational.

The museum also offers a variety of hands-on volunteer opportunities as well as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)-based programs to young students and schools at no cost.
