The directors of the OHSTT Solid Waste Corporation voted on December 19 2019 to enter into an agreement with ScrapDogs Community Compost to provide residents of the towns of Owls Head, South Thomaston and Thomaston an opportunity to recycle food scraps at the cooperative transfer station on Buttermilk Drive in Thomaston.

Owls Head, South Thomaston, Thomaston Solid Waste Corporation is a nonprofit formed in 2007 to process all municipal solid waste and recyclables for the three member municipalities. The corporation operates under an interlocal agreement approved by the citizens of the three member municipalities.

Beginning in February, residents who have a valid transfer station sticker properly affixed to their vehicle will be able to dispose of their household kitchen scraps and associated waste items into special bins provided by ScrapDogs at no cost to the corporation. Those materials will then be transported off site to be turned into compost.

Residents of the three towns will be able to choose from a variety of plans that fit their individual household needs for disposal, including one that will provide compost for use in their personal gardens.

“One of the benefits of the program is reduced costs to the corporation and the taxpayers of the three towns related to kitchen scraps that may not already get composted at home, according to a news release from the corporation. “By removing those food scraps from the municipal waste stream, which can contain as much as 90% or more moisture content, the volume and weight in the mixed solid waste containers will be reduced, thereby decreasing tipping fees.”

The corporation’s directors worked closely with ScrapDogs founders Davis Saltonstall and Tessa Rosenberry for the better part of a year to develop the program which will be in effect for a twelve-month period to gauge its success.
