built at Popham Colony in 1607-08

Online talk with Union Historical Society: Maine’s first ship ‘Virginia’

Event has passed

Union Historical Society presents the story of the Virginia, Maine’s First Ship, on Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m., on Zoom.

The Power Point by Jim Parmentier will explain how the vessel was built at Popham Colony in 1607-08 to explore the coast for the Plymouth Company. When the colony was abandoned in 1608, the Virginia was used to sail the 100 men and boys to England. It later returned to America to supply Jamestown.

Parmentier’s presentation includes photos of the replica under construction in Bath by a dedicated crew of volunteers.

The presentation was scheduled for launch last summer but delayed due to Covid 19. This program was originally planned for Maine’s Bicentennial.

A Zoom link will be posted at unionhistoricalsociety.org and in email messages to members of the society.
