Oceanside softball knocks off Ellsworth in regional semifinal showdown

THOMASTON — Both fourth-seed Oceanside (17-2) and eighth-seed Ellsworth (12-7) softball teams endured wild Class B North regional quarterfinal contests Thursday, June 8. For the Lady Mariners, senior Alexis Mazurek blasted a solo walk-off home run against fifth-seed Medomak Valley in an eight inning affair. For the Lady Eagles, they went on the road to Gardiner where they stunned the top-seeded Lady Tigers. 

Both the Lady Mariners and Lady Eagles were looking to keep their remarkable 2017 campaigns alive when they met on the diamond Saturday, June 10 in a regional semifinal showdown. 

Oceanside quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before chalking up two more in the fourth. Ellsworth plated three runs in the top of the sixth and Oceanside extended its lead by plating one more run in the bottom half of the sixth. Ellsworth plated one more run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough and Oceanside pulled off the 8-4 victory extending the win streak to 13. 

With the win, the Lady Mariners punched their tickets to the Class B North regional championship contest to be held Tuesday, June 13 at Brewer High School where they will challenge second-seed Old Town at 7 p.m.

The winner of the June 13 contest will face the winner of the Class B South regional championship game that will feature top-seed Wells and third-seed Fryeburg in the state championship game to be held Saturday, June 17 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish with a 12:30 p.m. start time.

The Oceanside softball team is comprised of Haylie Witham (senior; center field), Casey Benner (senior; second base), Lauren Hatch (senior; third base and center field), Abby Veilleux (sophomore; catcher), Casey Pine (junior; shortstop), Mazurek (senior; first base), Hannah Moholland (sophomore; right field), Raechel Joyce (sophomore; second base), Kalli Grover (sophomore; left field), Chloe Jones (sophomore; pitcher) and Morgan Heal (sophomore; third base and left field). The team’s head coach is Rusty Worcester, who is assisted by Rachel Campbell and Mike McGuire. 

The Ellsworth softball team is comprised of Trinity Montigny (left field; freshman), Samantha Mason (pitcher; senior), Mackenzie Chipman (pitcher; sophomore), Abby Moon (center field; sophomore), Audrey Ward (center field; freshman), Leah Stevens (center field; senior), Shelby Cote (second base; junior), Bailey Peterson (pitcher; freshman), Hannah Sargent (third base; junior), Mariah Young (third base; junior), Emma Pickering (right field; senior), Isabelle Perry (right field; sophomore), Ellie Clarke (first base; sophomore), Katherine Hammer (right field; sophomore), Callie Hammer (catcher; senior), Sydney Stevens (left field; sophomore) and Katelynn Bagely (shortstop, junior). The team’s head coach is Dotty Cameron, who is assisted by Phyllicia Jordan.
