The nature of Belfast: A walk on the In-Town Nature Trail

Event has passed

BELFAST — The Belfast Garden Club’s monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Belfast Free Library Abbott Room in Belfast, will feature a presentation by Karin Wittmann on the Belfast In-Town Nature Trail.

A brief public club business meeting will begin at 1 p.m., after which light refreshments will be served. Wittman will begin her presentation at 2 p.m.

“This is an amazing in-town nature trail that can be explored in several individual, small loops, each with a distinctive flavor. The entire trail encompasses five miles,” Wittman said in a news release.

Her presentation will cover some of the outstanding features of the trail include two state champion monarch trees, surprising birds, and ancient geology along the shore. She will give brief attention to other local trails.

The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition is the lead sponsor of the new in-town trail. Four other local nonprofit organizations collaborated with the Coalition to make the dream a reality: Habitat Belfast, Our Town Belfast, Friends of Belfast Parks and the Belfast Garden Club.

Each of the four trail segments is outlined in a colorful brochure that’s enhanced with photographs by Dan Avener.

Karin Wittman has a passion for sustainable practices and wild places. She is a faculty member with the Center for Ecological Living and Learning (CELL) and teaches in Iceland for part of the year. She has been teaching experiential education programs with both university students and community members for more than 20 years.

Wittman is a registered Maine guide, and has traveled extensively across North America teaching about wilderness, sustainability and community.

She has a doctorate in natural resources management from Colorado State University.

All meetings of the club are free and open to the public, and the club welcomes new members and volunteers year round.
