Native Fish Coalition presents on rare Arctic Charr

ROCKPORT — Georges River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) welcomes Native Fish Coalition, represented by Emily Bastian and Bob Mallard, for a presentation on New England's rare Arctic charr, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., in Rockport. 

The presentation will include a brief history about New England's Arctic charr, and discussion of biology, status, threats, conservation, and fishing for this rare species.

Mallard is a founding member and national vice chair of Native Fish Coalition. He is a former fly shop owner and a registered Maine fishing guide.  He is the publisher, northeast regional editor and a regular contributor to Fly Fish America magazine; a columnist with Southern Trout online magazine, and a staff fly designer at Catch Fly Fishing. 

His writing, photographs, and flies have been featured at the local, regional and national level.

Mallard has written two books and contributed to several others. 

Bastian is the general manager for Trident Fly Fishing. She is a registered Maine guide and has fly fished since she was eight years old. 

Bastian is a degreed ecologist and has worked as a national park ranger, Maine game warden, law enforcement officer and field biologist.

She worked for Maine Audubon from 2011 to 2016 where she was responsible for the Maine Brook Trout Survey Project which identified previously unknown populations of wild brook trout in remote ponds and coastal streams. 

Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit organization with a mission dedicated to conserve, protect and restore North America's cold water fisheries and their watersheds.

The GRTU meeting February 11 will be held in the upstairs mezzanine at Flatbread Company in Rockport. The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with an informal gathering for those who wish to converse and enjoy a casual meal.

The featured presentation begins at 7 p.m.

GRTU conducts a raffle directly following the speaker.  

Membership is open to all, and the Georges River chapter welcomes individuals from Midcoast and Downeast Maine. Meetings are free and open to the public.
