ROCKLAND — This year the main event of the Millay Arts & Poetry Festival will feature a talk and poetry reading by Wesley McNair, a Maine Poet Laureate, and will be held in the Farnsworth Art Museum Library, Saturday, September 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The event, co-sponsored by Millay House Rockland and the Farnsworth Art Museum and funded by The First National Bank and many individual donors, will also feature Three Songs for Voice and Piano, by Edna St. Vincent Millay and Efrem Zimbalist, performed by pianist Sojourner Crowley and Soprano Erin Chenard.

Wesley McNair is the winner of many literary awards and was named “one of the great storytellers of contemporary poetry” by poet Philip Levine. McNair’s talk, “Millay and Me,” will share the similarities of their childhoods, growing up without fathers, inspired by New England and political events, creating poetry of strong feelings and emotions.

Other events of the Millay Arts & Poetry Festival will begin Friday, September 6, with Pop-Up Poets joining the street musicians during the final First Friday Art Walk of the season, from 5 to 8 p.m., and continuous reading of Millay’s poems on the Roof Garden of Harbor Square Gallery, with occasional cello interludes.

Saturday morning, September 7, the Farnsworth will host a Children’s Poetry Workshop in the Farnsworth Library, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Bartlett Woods Retirement Center, on Talbot Avenue, will show the documentary film, Burning the Candles: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Saturday, September 7, at 10:30 a.m.

And to cap off the festival, there will be a Poetry Slam! at FOG Bar & Café on Main Street in Rockland, Saturday evening, September 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. There will be an open mic for poets, before and after the Poetry Slam!
