ROCKPORT — Midcoast Community Chorus (MCC), a multi-generational chorus, invites the public to celebrate spring and help support this year’s concert beneficiary, OUT Maine, by attending the MCC spring concert, “Spheres,” Sunday, June 16, at 7 p.m., at Camden Hills Regional High School’s Strom Auditorium, on Rt 90, in Rockport.
MCC believes that everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard and this year’s beneficiary organization is a perfect match for that vision, according to MCC, in a news release.
OUT Maine empowers, supports and educates rural lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth who are at very high risk, especially those who are isolated in our rural communities. Nine out of ten of these youth are bullied regularly in their schools and communities; LGBTQ youth have three to four times the suicidal thoughts and actions of their heterosexual peers; and they represent 25-40% of Maine’s homeless teens.
OUT Maine uses a multi-faceted approach to change these realities and replace them with hope and a brighter future:
– Through youth opportunities such as weekly programs, weekend leadership retreats, a statewide Rainbow Ball Weekend and the upcoming Studio Immersion Weekend at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, OUT Maine builds relationships and provides safety, affirmation and hope.
– As a result of staff and student trainings and support for Gay/Straight/Trans Alliances, Maine’s schools are safer and more supportive.
– A strong safety net of over 7000 trained and informed health and mental health care providers, school staff, clergy and youth service organizational leaders is available to provide safe haven for LGBTQ youth in Maine’s most rural areas.
– More Maine youth remain living at home through OUT Maine’s support and consultation for parents and families.
