Messalonskee hands Camden Hills ice hockey its first loss

ROCKPORT — Hosting a game for the second time this season, the Windjammers could not keep its three game win streak alive Saturday, Dec. 14 against Messalonskee at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport.

In fact, the Windjammers allowed the visiting Eagles to collect four unanswered goals, and a 4-1 victory, after neither team tallied a goal in the opening period.

In the second period, the host Windjammers scored its lone goal with 9:14 remaining when Charlie Griebel scored courtesy a Noah Quesnel assist.

From there, it was a Messalonskee scoring affair as the visiting Eagles tallied a trio of goals in the second period from Myles Hammond (Dylan Cunningham and Connor Evans assist), Benjamin Hellen (Cunningham assist) and Cunnginham.

For good measure, the visiting Eagles contributed one final tally with 25 seconds remaining in the game when Cunningham scored on a powerplay.

In the goalie net for Camden Hills was Jackson Bernier, who contributed 13 saves.

“I believe the combination of coming into the game 3-0 and dominating the only assets that Messalonskee had for the first three shifts of the game instilled a sense of entitlement in our players,” said Camden Hills head coach John Magri. “There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Success can lead to arrogance and arrogance can lead to failure.”

The Windjammers’ coach said, overall, the team knows what it has to work on to make a run at a state championship, noting the competition in Class B North is strong this season.

“From the goal line to the blue line we let down and lost the game as an entire team,” said Magri. “We stopped skating, ignored the systems in place, engaged in selfish individual focused play, were not first to puck and handed the game away. Other than the opening three shifts of the game this was the slowest hockey we have played all season.”

Despite the loss, Magri and the Windjammers are looking ahead to its next contest.

“We are optimistic that this loss was a very timely piece of the season that inspires gritty investment from the players into every shift, every game, and maintain that level of investment throughout the entire season and into the post season,” said Magri.

The Windjammers will take the ice again Saturday, Dec. 21 on the road against Gorham at the University of Southern Maine ice arena.
