Merryspring webinar with Herb Wilson: Changes in Maine Bird Populations

Event has passed

Wildlife biologist Dr. Herb Wilson will lead an online webinar on how Maine bird populations have changed over the past 200 years hosted by Merryspring Nature Center, on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 12 p.m.

Dr. Wilson’s talk will look back at changes in Maine's bird populations over the past 200 years including species that are no longer here, species that have established themselves, and eye-popping rarities.

The talk will also assess the population status of Maine’s more common birds, noting some heartening increases and some disconcerting declines.

Along the way, Wilson will acknowledge the ornithologists and birders who have contributed so richly to the knowledge of the birds of Maine.

Wilson is the David Arey Emeritus Professor of Biology at Colby College. He grew up in North Carolina and received his B.S. in zoology from the University of North Carolina. He earned his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from Johns Hopkins University.

His ecological research has involved a number of groups of organisms, including intertidal invertebrates, dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and particularly birds. He held post-doctoral fellowships in Florida at the Harbor Branch Foundation and in Nova Scotia  at Dalhousie University and a Research Scientist position at the Manomet Bird Observatory in Massachusetts. He then taught for three years at the University of Washington before joining the Biology Department at Colby College in 1990. At Colby, he taught ornithology, marine invertebrate zoology, marine ecology, evolution and diversity, winter ecology and occasional January courses in Costa Rica and the Galápagos Islands. He retired in the spring of 2019.
