ROCKPORT — Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Teen Agricultural (Ag) Crew and staff invite the public to join them for a presentation, Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Camden Hills Regional High School, in Rockport.
The presentation, starting at 3:30 p.m., in the cafeteria, will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the Teen Ag Crew program that grows a four-acre vegetable garden at Erickson Fields Preserve on Rte. 90 in Rockport.
Attendees will meet the high school crew members, sample dishes featuring Erickson Fields produce, and learn about youth-led food security and access projects happening in the Midcoast.
The produce from the market garden is distributed to eight food relief agencies throughout Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties, as well as MSAD 28, Quarry Hill Retirement Community, and several local restaurants.
Through diligent, cohesive team work the Teen Ag Crew manages from seed to distribution over 30 different crops at Erickson Fields, learning the A-Z’s of market garden production.
This past season the Teen Ag Crew produced over 30,000 lbs of vegetables, most of which supplied local food pantries through a contract with Good Shepard Food Bank, according to a news release.
Since the program started in 2010, the Teen Ag Crew has distributed nearly 100,000 lbs of produce to local food pantries.
